Synopsis:
"Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle's pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and turns him into a legend. Back home to his wife and kids after four tours of duty, however, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind." - IMDB
My Review:
This is one great movie! I was truly impressed with what was achieved here and now fully understand why it received 6 Oscar nominations! Though do be warned! This is a very sad movie, and some scenes are a bit hard to watch.
Acting: Think of the best performance you've seen Bradley Cooper give in a movie. Thought of one? Alright, now think harder for an even better one. What came to mind? "Silver Linings Playbook", "American Hustle", maybe even "Guardians of the Galaxy". Well I am sad to tell you that you thought wrong. Bradley Cooper gave the best performance of his career in American Sniper! While watching this movie, never did I think "Hey that's Bradley Cooper!" Throughout the entire movie he was nothing but Chris Kyle. I was so blown away by how good he was in this role, I now see why he was nominated (for his 3rd time I might add) for an Oscar in this role. Sienna Miller played his wife in the movie; I wasn't aware of who she was going into the movie, but boy do I now! It kind of surprises me that she hasn't been getting much praise for what she did here; no I wouldn't say her performance was Oscar worthy, but I sure do think that it deserves some recognition! Every other actor didn't have that big of a role here, but every soldier or Iraqis did a tremendous job!
Directing: Clint Eastwood has always been one of my favorite directors, but with American Sniper he has solidified himself as not only one of my favorite directors, but as one of the greatest directors of all time! Although he was snubbed from the directing category at the Oscars, I don't find it as upsetting as other snubs due to the fact that he's already won in that category twice. The way he chose to approach this movie with doing shots while at war and shots while at home was a very good choice. It doesn't get too drama heavy, and neither does it get too action heavy. One really important thing that I feel that he did was film difficult scenes to watch. There were quite a bit throughout, but it was an important thing to depict to show you how difficult and frightening things were.
Story: The whole movie revolves around real-life US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle & his life in and out of war. I thought this script was well written, it didn't have parts that drag on like other movies tend to. There was only one issue I had with the story and it was at the end. Now before I go into detail I will warn you, SPOILER ALERT. If you haven't seen the movie & want to go in with having heard absolutely nothing then read no further!!! Alright, you've been warned; the issue I had was with the very last scene were it cuts out and says something along the lines of "Chris Kyle was killed that day while helping out a vet." That didn't make much sense to me, I feel that they could've easily made it more clear. Instead when the movie was over I had to Google to find out his it was that he died.
My Conclusion:
I highly recommend this movie to everyone! Especially now, due to the fact that there isn't much playing in the theaters. This is a truly eye opening & gut wrenching film. Overall I give "American Sniper" a 9 out of 10 stars for it's superb acting, masterful directing, and great (yet disappointing at the end) story!
