Synopsis:
"A team of explorers travel through a wormhole in an attempt to ensure humanity's survival." - IMDb
My Review:
I have absolutely no idea as to how I didn't see this movie in theaters! I actually bought this movie based off of the faith I have in Christopher Nolan, and I also felt that the trailers were pretty darn cool!
Acting: The cast in this movie is so unbelievable! Matthew McConaughey has very quickly become one of my favorite actors! I thought he sold the bond between him and Murph astonishingly well! There were also some dramatic sequences in the movie where you can feel the agony his character is feeling! Mackenzie Foy who plays the younger version of Murph was great here! Usually with child actors you don't always necessarily get the best performance, but in this case - wow. She had a pretty tough job having to sell her sadness and stubbornness and she did it as well as any adult actress could've! Jessica Chastain, who is also becoming one of my favorite actresses, did great here! She sold me from the very first time she sends her dad a video! And I have two feelings towards Anne Hathaway in this movie. Feeling #1: I really liked her performance here! I thought she was great in the role and was very convincing in certain distressed sequences. Feeling #2: Though I liked Anne Hathaway's performance; I didn't like the way her character was realized, and I know that it isn't Anne Hathaway's fault - but more of Christopher Nolan's; but that is a topic for the story section. Next up, Michael Caine; I thought he did a really gold and convincing job here, though he does become a very unlikeable character towards the end of the movie (you'll have to find out for yourself as to why). I think Casey Affleck did good with what he was given, sadly enough his role was very underdeveloped. John Lithgow, Wes Bentley, and David Gyasi all did a very good job as well! And last but not least, Matt Damon. Boy was I shocked that he was in this movie; I have to hand it to this movie's marketing campaign for hiding him! I thought he did a good job, and an even better job at convincing me that what he was doing was very rude - in his mind it was for the greater good!
Directing: Christopher Nolan has always been one of my favorite directors, along with David Fincher; I could never figure out which one of them I preferred. Now that I watched Interstellar, I think Nolan takes the cake! From the very first shot of this movie which opens on a book shelf, I fell in love. Everything was so beautifully shot, the visuals were great, the cinematography was perfect! I look forward to Nolan's next film, and this time I'll be lined up at the theater to watch it!!
Story: This may be what takes points off of Interstellar's overall rating. I felt that the first 2/3 of this movie were unbelievably spectacular! I was sucked into this spectacular world that Christopher & Johnathon Nolan had created! I was so emotionally invested with Cooper & Murph's characters throughout the entire movie! Earlier I had said that I had a few problems with Anne Hathaway's character, what could those problems have been? Well I think that they made her a very irresponsible scientist. When you're first introduced to her, you're made to think that she's one of the best there is; yet when she's actually in the field and has several responsibilities - she screws up. One scene in particular which I'm going to do my best to not give away, was where she was trying to get something while being ordered to go back on board - and refused to listen. I felt that she irresponsibly risked the entire mission, and while doing that - risked the entire human race. I also felt that the last 1/3 of this movie wasn't as good ad the first 2/3. There is a point where you think the movie is going to end - but it continues going for about another half hour. Now granted I felt very emotional watch McConaughey's character through this half hour, it took me out of this experience. Up until this point I was following the movie perfectly and then I had to try and figure out what was going on which threw me off. I think it may require a bit more viewings for me to fully understand what went on because I had felt very confused; I also feel that there were a few coincidences that went on in the movie, and one big one here in the end. I did really like the ending to this movie, but I feel like it is one that grows on you with time; and it's hard to bring yourself into liking it because of how good the first 2/3,really is.
Conclusion:
Though it's ending wasn't as great as it could've been, it still really enjoyed this movie! If you were like me and didn't watch it in theaters, go and buy it on Blu-Ray (it's that good) and experience this "stellar" film! I also wanted to point out how amazing this movie's score is! Overall I give "Interstellar" a 9 out of 10 stars for it's acting, directing, and story! Let me know your thought's on the film - did you like it or not and why! As always, be sure to check in regularly for more Daily David Movies!
