Synopsis:
"As his kingdom is being threatened by the Turks, young prince Vlad Tepes must become a monster feared by his own people in order to obtain the power needed to protect his own family, and the families of his kingdom." - IMDB
My Review:
I'm going to be honest, I was a bit let down with this movie. I did like it, but I had heard great word-of-mouth reviews from a lot of people which may have gotten my hopes too high.
Acting: I thought Luke Evans was great in the role. I'm actually really glad that Luke Evans has begun to be frequently seen now in Hollywood; with his role in Fast & Furious 6, the last two Hobbit entries, and now Dracula Untold. I think he is a tremendously talented actor and that we'll be seeing a lit more of him! I think Charles Dance did a good job, but I was let down for the vampire's makeup. I thought Sarah Gadon who played Vlad's wife did a really good job! Art Parkinson also did a pretty good job as Vlad's son.
Directing: Gary Shore directed & I thought he did a good job guiding the movie where it was meant to go. He gave us a fresh take on seeing how infamous vampire 'Dracula' came to be!
Story: The story is the one aspect of this movie that I didn't necessarily like. Only because I feel that it contradicted itself at the climax of the movie. I am going to talk about why I felt that it contradicted itself; SPOILER ALERT. I REPEAT SPOILER. In the scene where Val is talking to the Vampire about wanting great strength to save his people, the vampire tells him to drink his blood; there is a condition though, if he feeds on blood in 3 days he will become a vampire, permanently. If you've seen the the climax, he becomes a vampire and has all his dying townspeople drink his blood so they'll also get temporary strength. They end up feeding in the Turks, yet they didn't become permanent Vampires. So that contradicted the initial scene with the Master Vampire. Other that I was really pleased with the way they approached this new telling of how Dracula came to be.
My Conclusion:
If you are a fan of vampire movies, or science fiction for that matter then you may want to watch, or even buy it. Would I buy it? Maybe if it were on sale for like $10, other than that I would say it's more of a rental. Overall I give "Dracula Untold" a 7 out of 10 for its acting, directing, and story.
